This is a great design and love the look of the black steel. We are also looking at the Cosmos fireplace but are curious how the Cosmos frame is eliminated or is the frame covered up by the steel panels. Also have the same questions as Tom above. What a great house and project.
Thanks,
Derek

mike,
i love this blackened steel. three questions....

1. what kind of steel was used?
2. where did you purchase it?
3. how is it secured to the wall? i don't see any screws.

your place is really inspirational.

thanks,
tom

Steve: You're right. My bad. Changed text to "heat conductor". As for furniture, ha... that picture was taken by one of the architects before we moved in.

Oleg: Thanks for the offer... will let you know if and when any more carpentry is needed.

Kevin: You guys should really do a whole post about those stairs.

And as long as we're pouring on the Bart love, look at those concealed stair brackets would you!? Not only are the stairs solid, but the attachment to the steel channel stringers is entirely hidden. Like magic!

Mike:

This is a great website/blog and a beautiful home. I have enjoyed reading about the process and the decision-making involved in designing & building a custom home. I'm actually on the east coast, but have visited the Seattle area often since my in-laws live there. It looks like you have picked a great location overlooking the Puget Sound.

By the way, if you or your contractor is ever in need of an excellent master craftsman finish carpenter, shoot me an email and I'll provide the contact information for my father-in-law. He has been in the business for over 15 years specializing in finish carpentry, including custom projects (e.g. grand staircases, fireplace enclosures, cabinetry, etc).

Regards,
Oleg

Hey Mike,

The fireplace looks great, really striking with the textured steel. The steel acts as a conductor to disperse the heat—not a thermal mass—it can't retain heat. Once the fire is off the heat's gone. For thermal mass you need substantial stone or concrete.

Did you forget to put furniture in the budget??
