Great post on the issues we face when doing construction timelapse! We have actually developed a system that allows the users to choose a set-up that fits their timelapse needs specifically which you can view at http://www.photosentinel.com.au/. This system allows the user to choose between a high resolutions DSLR camera or a point and shoot, the power type (solar or 240V), is 3G compatible and settings can be configured online and all is housed in a IP66 weather proof housing. Check the website and feel free to contact us if you have questions.

I just setup a timelapse last night at property I plan to build on. I do not have any internet out there at all and only have power in 1 spot so my options were limited. I ended up getting camera from www.wingscapes.com (bought at local hardware store). I did a short timelapse of me at work and everything looked great. The quality is very good and the features are exactly what you want for a timelapse. It is battery operated, weather proof and stores pictures on an SD card so it is exactly what I wanted. It has only been running for 1 day so I can't comment on how good the end result will be. The camera I got was designed for birds and plants but should work perfect for a house. I have also heard you can buy similar products at hunting places like cabelas- apparently hunters use them to record where game walks.

I use a used Olympus SP500-UZ 6MP camera as a webcam. It has very stable operation. You can make a very high resolution time-lapse with it. I'm the author of the software SebecTec.

Mike, Good to see you are finally under construction. The webcam is nice; but it would sure be helpful to see additional angles including how your house blends with its surroundings.

I figured that may have been the cause, although hopefully the gamble will pay off and we wont have super cold winter.

Did you have any recommendations on the Axis cams (for lower budget)?

Damien: That other Panasonic would have been nice except it can't do a megapixel. Maximum resolution of 640x480. If your budget is lower, I would recommend trying to pick something up on eBay. There are actually quite a few Axis cams on there. I would have gotten one if I found the one I wanted.

Awesome post! am in same position and had started researching...this certainly jump started it. What made you choose Panasonic Panasonic BB-HCM515A which is indoor instead of BB-HCM531A (outdoor) and has better night camera and price is pretty much the same? Are there other cameras you recommend for someone with less of a budget?

Great post, good info here.

The time lapse video is really cool. It would be cool if the player had the ability to slow down playback, so the viewer can watch what's going on more closely.
